The bottom features a nonsense text: "OPT. 82. BOOSTER BNG. ANGUINEA/Y..." Printed in black and red on an orange background (Support the Revolution, p. 173.) One of 100 numbered copies signed by Berman, this being copy number 1. This was publisher John Martin's personal copy inscribed by Berman "For John." The poster is slightly faded with the orange color being a shade lighter and the red color in one radio image is faded to pink, else about fine (25" x 22"). Presents very nicely overall, and quite desirable inscribed to the person who published the poster and also used Berman's art on the covers of several Black Sparrow books. SKB-451

| [DRUGS] BLACK, Jack & BURROUGHS, William S. You Can't Win. NY: Macmillan Company, 1927. Hardbound in the rare dust jacket. Fourth printing. Foreword by Robert Herrick. Fabulous autobiography of Jack Black, thief, drug user, prison inmate, and tramp. William Burroughs calls You Can't Win one of his most important early influences. He lifted characters like "Salt Chunk Mary" directly from this book, and it inspired his concept of the "Johnsons," a turn-of-the-century term used to designate good bums and thieves, that Burroughs elaborated into a code of conduct. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in Burroughs, hobos, drug confessions, or life in America when it was still "wide open." Any printing of this book is rare in dust jacket. This is only the second copy we've had in 22 years of active searching, although we do know of a jacketed first that a colleague sold for $12,500. Owner's name to f.f.e., else fine in remarkably bright, fresh, very good plus to near fine jacket. SKB-4604 | |

Blake was one of the most important surfing pioneers and surf board designers, and his 1935 Hawaiian Surfrider was the first book on surfing: "While Blake can't be placed ahead of Duke Kahanamoku as the world's most influential surfer, his contributions to the sport---in terms of board design, wave-riding technique, competition, surf photography, and literature---are in many ways more tangible (Encyclopedia of Surfing)." Very scarce item from the pre-Gidget days of the surfing scene before it was co-opted by mainstream culture. Bright, about fine. SKB-12713

| [HIPPIES] BOISE, Ron & SPEYER, Lars. Ron Boise Kama Sutra Calendar for 1966. Palo Alto: Quicksilver Productions, [1965]. Calendar featuring b&w photos of Boise's notorious "Kama Sutra" sculptures, metal figures made from used car parts that are here posed on the beach in different positions of copulation. When they were originally shown at the Vorpal Gallery in 1964 they were confiscated by the police leading to an important censorship case that Boise won, apparently even managing to sell some sculptures to Kim Novak who was in attendance at his trial! Boise's explicit sculptures join the busted Mime Troupe performances, Lenore Kandel's The Love Book, and McClure's The Beard, as victims of police efforts to suppress the Haight-Ashbury hippie scene. Fine with the original wrap-around band. Very scarce thus. A nice copy of this wonderful Zeitgeist item. SKB-14337 | |

Island Records b&w publicity shot of the band standing in the desert, nicely signed by the entire group with Bono adding the date "87" next to his signature. This photo originally came from U2's publicist Alvenia Bridges who had the group sign it for her (included is the 7-page memo from the 1987 press conference where the photo was signed). A nice item from a vital period in the band's development---and their impact has only increased during the intervening 20 years. Probably the most important post-sixties rock group. U2 autograph material with solid provenance is scarce. SKB-13577

| [FILM: Marlon Brando] BRANDO, Marlon & HEGGEN, Thomas & LOGAN, Joshua. Mister Roberts. NY: Random House, [1948]. Hardbound, lacking the dust jacket. Third printing. Marlon Brando's personal copy with his extensive handwritten notes to the front pastedown and endpaper and with his markings throughout the text including a couple of annotations. Brando has written (in part): "the focus should perhaps be that he wants to get off the can and away from the captain rather than persue [sic] the fulfillment of a neurotic compulsion to do his share. He seems to me to be driven, by some kind of guilt feeling, into his frantic effort to get into the bullets." Then later (in part): "pg. 45 confirms his irrationality on the subject and makes his ambition compulsion and and [sic] not derived from a source of true nobility of character or refinement of moral principal." A splendid artifact from early in Brando's career when he was considering (and then rejected) the role that Jack Lemmon played in the 1955 film. Provenance: included is a signed letter from Pat Quinn, Brando's girlfriend (and later employee), stating that Brando gave her this book. Quinn's relationship with Brando is well documented in Peter Manso's biography. Also Brando's elaborate bookplate is affixed to the rear pastedown. Books from this period in Brando's life, especially with his substantive annotations relating to acting, rarely appear on the market. A couple of pages have pulled loose, else a well-read, but solid and presentable copy. SKB-13411 | |
