GINSBERG, Allen. ''America when will you be angelic?'' [Berkeley: Privately published, ca. 1969]. Broadside. First separate printing of this excerpt from the poem, "America." Features a photo of Ginsberg at a microphone and the text: "America when will you be angelic? / When will you take off your clothes / America when will we end the human war / America the plum blossoms are falling." This broadside was silk-screened by activists at U. C. Berkeley in the sixties as part of a series of antiwar posters that they produced. In true sixties style it was done using available materials, in this case computer print-out paper with perforations to the edges and numbers on back, presumably liberated from the mathematics department. Fine. A Ginsberg rarity and a zeitgeist momento from the heart of the student activist counterculture. SKB-13380

W. Taylor to check out translation, I'll have to try another way." Signed in full. Folds from mailing, slightly wrinkled. SKB-6109

GINSBERG, Allen. Autograph Letter Signed to Francois Legros. n.p.:n.p., [1974]. 1 and 1/3 pages on aerogramme stationary. 4to. Paris. June 18, 1974. Ginsberg writes apologizing for his long silence saying that he's been "fitfully maintaining correspondence with City Lights, Claude Beach, Bourgois, J. J. Lebel and others..." About Legros' translation he remarks that "It's a lot of work for me to do this checking, I doubt if I can continue to do so, and apparently it displeases you anyway. So what to do? Leave it at your text without second set of eyes to check for holes + French-long syntax? I am building a small wood house a few hundred yards away in woods from Gary Snyder, some physical work and can hardly answer letters, much less find a French/hip/Americanese tongue expert. Claude and Mary say they can't work at Bourgois' low wages. I offered them some percentage of my royalties for their fine work but they are busy." Signed "Allen." Old folds from mailing, else fine. Nice literary content. SKB-6110
$225

Ginsberg mentions plans for the Kerouac 25th Anniversary of On the Road celebration: "try to bring together Kerouac's poet friends, publishers, critics, fellow novelists & some family & Lucien Carr & Huncke too..." Ginsberg resumes speaking about his various projects including a book from City Lights, contract negotiations on Collected Poems, "a 2 record album out in late fall via John Hammond Sr.'s new label...with a few 1970 cuts with Dylan," a mammoth 500 page anthology on "heroic expansive poetry," and his City Lights "F.B.I. Attack on Underground papers" book. He closes with talk about his travel plans including a visit to the International Poets Conference in Mexico City, his efforts to nominate Gary Snyder to the American Institute of Arts and Letters, and he states that "Since Tom Clark left for Santa Barbara there's been much less conspiratorial disturbance here & everybody's gone back to meditation & poetry"---plus more. A substantive letter filled with strong literary content and many references to Ginsberg's Beat friends. A letter very much reflective of his life during this period. Creased for mailing, else fine. GINSBERG, Allen. Iron Horse. SF: City Lights Books, 1974. Oblong 16mo. Softbound. First edition thus. Presentation copy inscribed by Ginsberg to his long-time friend, publisher Allen DeLoach: "For Allen DeLoach / Allen Ginsberg / Dec. 3, 75." Ginsberg has also made hand-corrections in two places. In one place he crossed out two words, in the other he adds an explanatory note about one of the lines in the poem: "Darani on removing disasters. See D.T. Suzuki Manual of Zen Buddhism." A nice association as DeLoach was a well-respected figure in the Beat literary scene---he published Intrepid magazine, one of the most important little mags of the era, and an early showcase for Ginsberg, Burroughs et al. He also published a series of pamphlets, including one by Orlovsky, in his Beau Flauve series. Fine. SKB-11669

GINSBERG, Allen & MILES, Barry (ed.). Howl: Original Draft Facsimile, Transcript & Variant Versions. NY: Harper & Row, [1986]. 4to. Hardbound in dust jacket. First edition. Presentation copy inscribed by Ginsberg to his long-time friend and fellow writer John Clellon Holmes: "Dear John, Here's a book wouldn't exist without your hand & heart. Allen Ginsberg 2/3/87 N.Y.C." Ginsberg has also done a drawing of a sunflower with its stem turning into a snake. Holmes was among the original founding members of the Beat Generation, and his novel Go was the first book written about Kerouac, Ginsberg, and their circle of friends in New York in the late '40s (and the first book to use the phrase "The Beat Generation"). More importantly, it was Holmes who received from Kerouac in the mid-'50s an early draft of Howl that Holmes discovered among his papers and returned to Ginsberg 25 years later, making possible the publication of this book. Minor foxing to top edge and top edge of the inside of the dust jacket, else about fine. A superb association copy of the definitive edition of Howl inscribed to Ginsberg's old friend without whom the book could not have been published. SKB-13894
