| [DRUGS] LEARY, Timothy & METZNER, Ralph. ''Statement of Purpose of the International Federation for Internal Freedom.'' [Cambridge, MA: Privately published, 1963]. Single octavo sheet folded to make four pages. First edition. A collaborative effort with Leary being the primary author. The Harvard psychedelics researchers, including Leary, Alpert, Metzner, Litwin, and Weil, joined with a few other associates such as Huston Smith, Alan Watts, and Walter C. Clark, to form the International Federation for Internal Freedom (IFIF). As Leary's position at Harvard became untenable due to the controversial nature of his psilocybin experiments, he needed another framework where he could explore psychedelics outside the confines of a conventional institution. This paper describes in detail the goals and objectives of the IFIF, including to "encourage persons to band together in such research groups for systematic exploration of consciousness," and "to obtain drugs and to make them available (in conformity wth existing laws) to research groups." The paper states that "Indole substances (LSD, mescaline, psilocybin, etc.) are the most powerful agents yet discovered for opening the mind to new data," and it stresses the importance of "set and setting." One of the most important, seminal manifestos of the Psychedelic Revolution published three years before LSD became illegal, and preceding the Acids Tests by a year. Slight toning to fore-edge, few light handling creases, about fine. Rare. SKB-11660 | |

First separate printing of one of the earliest psychology papers authored or co-authored by Leary. The text reproduces two of the charts that Leary devised for measuring personality traits. These charts were widely used for many years in evaluating personality types, and were one of Leary's most important contributions to personality studies prior to his research with psychedelic drugs at Harvard a decade later. One of a small number of copies for the author's personal use. Fine. SKB-12500

The verso gives a detailed account of all the artists and musicians who will attend and notes that the event is presented by the League for Spiritual Discovery and was conceived by Ralph Metzner. Some toning to the edges, else near fine. The scarcest piece of ephemera relating to these public psychedelic celebrations that Leary also performed in Berkeley. SKB-14289
| [DRUGS: Timothy Leary] LEARY, Timothy & ALPERT, Richard & METZNER, Ralph. Program for ''The Illumination of the Buddha.'' n.p.:n.p., [1967]. A quarto mimeographed sheet printed on both sides. One side lists the participants and the sequence of the show---the other prints a long text (likely by Leary and Alpert) describing the "psychedelic religious experience...a highly-charged distillation of legend and fact, showing the exemplary career of an enlightened being." "A Psychedelic Celebration presented by the League for Spiritual Discovery" wherein Leary and Alpert used a discussion of the Buddha's path to enlightenment as a metaphor for the LSD experience. The multimedia show appeared in Greenwich Village and Berkeley and included chanting by Allen Ginsberg with a light show provided by Jackie Cassen and Rudi Stern. Horizontal crease with some toning to the crease, else fine. Scarce. SKB-13133 | |
| [DRUGS: Timothy Leary] LEARY, Timothy & ALPERT, Richard & ROSS, Robert. Poster announcing: ''Castalia Foundation for Psychedelic Research Presents Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert'' at Town Hall in N.Y.C. n.p.: Privately published, 1992. Second printing of the the first ever LSD poster. One of 5 artist proofs signed by Robert Ross who designed and printed the poster (there were also 18 numbered regular copies). Ross originally did this poster in 1964 on commission from Leary and Alpert who were appearing at Town Hall for their first major speaking engagement to discuss "How to Use Your Head," and to present "A New Theory of Human Nature Based on Recent Neurological and Pharmacological Evidence." The original print run was only 15 copies nearly all of which went to Leary and Alpert. This edition was printed using the original woodblocks on identical, black archival Murrillo paper using almost identical printer's inks. The poster features a very dynamic graphic design with sections of text in blue, green, brown, and red positioned in such a way on the black paper that the letters "LSD" emerge boldly from the negative space. A lovely and historically important poster, and very scarce since the total print run for both printings combined is only around 40 copies. Fine (32.5" x 26.25"). SKB-13678 | |

Featuring interesting typography, illustrations, and the occasional literary reference, these cards range in size from handbills to business cards to folding items, and include some unconventional, inventive shapes.
