[HIPPIES] NEVILLE, Richard, ANDERSEN, Jim & DENIS, Felix (eds.). Oz Magazine Nos. 1thru 48, January 1967---November 1973 (all published). n.p.:n.p., [1967]. A complete set of the most illustrious and controversial underground publication from London in the sixties. Oz was originally published as a satirical humor magazine from Australia, but in its more famous London incarnation the satire became more biting and subversive and their attacks on the establishment were unrelenting. The magazine's open advocacy of sex and drugs as forms of liberation, and their willingness to push the boundaries of language and nudity, resonated with the burgeoning hippie underground for whom Oz became the main outlet of expression. Their wildly psychedelic graphic design utilizing metallic foils, fluorescent inks, photo-collage, drawings, and cartoons immediately established Oz as one of the most opulent and visually exciting publications of its time, or arguably any other. Their innovative layouts often included vibrant wrap-around or pull-out posters from Martin Sharp, Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, and others. Oz No. 16, the all-graphic "Magic Theatre" issue overseen by Sharp and artist Phillipe Mora, has been described by author Jonathan Green as "arguably the greatest achievement of the entire British underground press." Oz was the subject of two celebrated obscenity trials, one in Australia in 1964, and another in London in 1971 that for many epitomized the authorities suppression of the hippie subculture. In both instances the magazine's editors were acquitted on appeal after initially being found guilty and sentenced to harsh jail terms. This set includes the Che Guevara poster insert (No. 8), the Outcry! People's Park poster (No. 21), the Honeybunch Kaminski poster (No. 24), the Print Mint posters leaflet (No. 26), the Jimi Hendrix / Oz News poster (No. 30), and the Janis Joplin / Oz Old Baily Trial poster (No. 36). Issues range from very good to fine---a lovely set overall. Complete sets of this inventive publication that took the underground press to a higher level of achievement are rare on the market.
